Alaska bans invasive cherry trees to protect its ecosystem

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA, US - SEPTEMBER 26, 2025: The Alaska Department of Agriculture has imposed a statewide ban on European bird cherry (Prunus padus) and Canada red or chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) species.Officials stated that the decision was made to protect Alaska's fragile ecosystem. It is noted that these trees, brought in as ornamental plants, have spread rapidly throughout the state and pose serious environmental threats.According to experts, these species shade waterways and negatively impact the habitats of salmon. Additionally, the cyanide compounds in their fruits pose a deadly risk to herbivorous animals such as moose.Furthermore, a fungal disease called “Black Knot” found in these trees threatens native fruit species.The Department of Agriculture announced that the sale, transport, and planting of these species are now prohibited. However, it was emphasized that their complete eradication will take a long time because they can sprout again from their roots.Officials stated that public support is critical to protecting the ecosystem in this fight.
