Congressman Self supports 2026 Farm Bill amendment to ban SNAP funds for sugary soda

Texas Congressman Keith Self says in debate on amendment to the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026 that would add soda to the definition of ineligible items and define soda as a carbonated beverage containing more than 1 gram of added sugar, artificial sweetener, or flavoring per serving that SNAP funds should not be used for sugary soda products with no nutritional value, proposes adding soda to ineligible items while preserving consumer choice through other payment methods, and frames the amendment as a targeted reform to align the program with its health objectives. The amendment later failed by a 186-238 recorded vote.
