The epidermis is KERATINIZED STRATIFIED SQUAMOUS EPITHELIUM--the outermost layer (Stratum corneum) has large amounts of a tough protein called KERATIN. The EPIDERMAL LAYERS shown include: Stratum Corneum, Stratum Granulosum, Stratum Spinosum and the Stratum Basale (basal layer). This image also shows: dermis, a sweat gland duct and squamous cells sloughing off of the epidermal surface.
