View Of Ancient Hari-Parbat Fort In Kashmir

SRINAGAR, KASHMIR, INDIA - MARCH 27: An over view of the Old city from the Hari- Parbat fort on March 27, 2018 in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian administered Kashmir, India. The Harbat Parbat hill found on the western side of the Dal Lake overlooking Srinagar has one of the ancient forts of Indian-administered Kashmir. The original fortifications were constructed in 1590 A.D. during the Mughal era. Situated on the banks of the Dal Lake, the hillock was initially turned into a military garrison for the Mughal forces during the reign of Emperor Akbar. A major wall protected the interiors called the Nagor Nagar. The outer wall has several gates and a rampart to keep vigil on the surroundings. Later, Afghan Governor Atta Mohammad Khan built a fort atop the hill and placed ammunition and cannons at the fort. Cannons were fired at regular intervals and the tradition continued till the Dogra rule in Kashmir. A cannon was fired in the morning to mark the beginning of the day and at noon to inform people about the midday. The fort, which spans over more than 10 acres, houses ponds and lawns. It also houses a mosque built during the Afghan rule. The fort was closed in the 1990s by Indian government forces after the eruption of armed rebellion in Kashmir and remained shut for more than 20 years. The government of Jammu and Kashmir under its tourism department has now renovated and illuminated the fort and thrown it open for the visitors. (Photo by Yawar Nazir/Getty Images)
