Japanese Bodies Scattered Among Debris

(Original Caption) Al Quiet on Tarawa. Tarawa: This was one strongpoint on bloody Tarawa. One of many that had to be eliminated by the U.S. Marines before the Jap base was ours. It cost many American lives, but it cost the Japs many more. Not a single man survived at this point. Bodies of Japs were strewn everywhere amid the debris. Note that the heavily reinforced dugout around which the bodies are clustered was hardly damaged by the terrific bombardment that preceeded the assault.
