(Original Caption) First Woman Judge from New York. New York, New York: Judge Mary H. Donlon (left), inducted at judge of the United States Customs Court, receives a gavel from U.S. Senator Irving M. Ives during her induction ceremonies at 201 Varick Street here. Judge Donlon is the first woman appointed by President Eisenhower to high judicial office. This marks the first appointment of a New York State woman to a federal judgeship. It is a life appointment. Looking on is chief judge Webster J. Oliver, who presided at the ceremony.
