Hayao Miyazaki fans find former fortress island off Wakayama beautiful

Video footage shows the uninhabited island of Tomogashima, a former naval fortress located about a 20-minute cruise from Wakayama. The facility near the entrance of Osaka Bay features five ruined battery emplacements, one dating from 1892. Likened to a venue in Hayao Miyazaki’s “Castle in the Sky” anime, the island drew about 86,000 visitors in 2017. The video footage was taken by Masaru Komiyaji of The Asahi Shimbun.
