In the lower back, the spinal cord branches to form the lumbar plexus and sacral plexus, giving rise to the femoral and sciatic nerves of the legs. At the shoulders the spinal cord branches into the brachial plexus, which contains the nerves supplying the arms. The spinal cord connects to the brain through the medulla oblongata of the brainstem.
