Theatre: Sir Ian McKellen and Toheeb Jimoh interview; Part 3 of 7 (CONTINUED FROM PART 2) ENGLAND: INT Sir Ian McKellen (Actor) and Toheeb Jimoh (Actor) interview SOT - (McKellen) These are plays about a country in turmoil and at war, civil war / you see the devastation in Gaza and Ukraine and are aware that people are going through this at the moment / it makes our story worth telling, particularly as in the middle of it all there's a man who cheats, lies and thieves and says in the middle of the battlefield 'give me life' / a sort of life force, we all want to live, I find that very moving as well / it's very rewarding in lots of different ways doing these plays Q: YOU'VE NEVER PLAYED FALSTAFF BEFORE, WHICH IS QUITE INCREDIBLE - (McKellen) And I wont be playing it again (laughter) / this is it folks Q: THIS IS IT JUST FOR THAT ROLE OR 'THIS IS IT' - (McKellen) Well, any actor who's played Falstaff will tell you; it's a very, very difficult part / the dialogue is very difficult, it's obscure / it's not written in verse, it's all prose, everyday speech, with references to things that have long gone / Rob has cut round that very carefully / but I think what I've been presented with is a script for a particular actor, and it's rather like being given a script of Billy Connolly, and told to make that funny, well you cant / the only person who can make that funny is Billy Connolly because it's written for him / so I've been trying to imagine 'what was this actor like who played Falstaff', we don't know who it was / he must have had a lot of stamina, but he must have been very dextrous with his words, which would be why Shakespeare liked him, they would have that in common, and he's funny isn't he - (Jimoh) He's very funny, but I think I'd also argue anyone who comes to watch this play will feel like those words were written for you and were improvised by you on the spot - (McKellen) Ohhh, you see / charmer, charmer - (Jimoh) It's not charm, it'...
