Sir David Attenborough interview; ***ITN Channel 4 News Exclusive*** ENGLAND: London: Sir David Attenborough interview SOT Q: How do we get onto another level of committed discourse? - I suspect the big movement that will make the quickest difference is when big multinational corporations are persuaded, for whatever reason, that they ought to take action now - e.g. get rid of plastic - corporations catching onto commercial opportunities in transferring to renewable energy and making energy storing/transportation/conversion more efficient Q: Don't we also need to make sure we are educating the consuming public? - That's true - two sides of same coin - hard to immediately stop use of plastic - also not yet there with the public Q: So we do need a revolution in education? - yes - primary schools and primary school teachers are some of the most active and invested in the issue - teachers doing a great job Q: Will we emerge from this election with a better understanding of the need to change our ways - No because, though C4 did well to make climate a central debate topic, the fact is the political parties haven't wanted to do it, didn't want to do it - you forced them to do it - political leaders are focused on the short term interests and concerns of the public and that is the problem with having a short term life for a government - regular elections mean politicians don't think long term - e.g. 10/15 years off Q: Are you an optimist? - I don't think things are getting better - I think we can slow the degree to which things are getting worse CUTAWAYS Sir David Attenborough as sitting with reporter, reporter asking questions and reporter listening (3 of 3)
