Second largest of the islands in the Maddalena archipelago, Caprera lies to the north of the Gulf of Arzachena off the Galluran coast of Sardinia, Punta Crucitta being its northernmost point. Scarcely populated, the island was home to Giuseppe Garibaldi, father of Italian unification, for almost thirty years, while its unspoilt natural environment has made it a popular hiking destination. The Maddalena Archipelago National Park was established in 1994, the first such park to be created in Sardinia.
