A monk in the monastery of Debre Birhan Selassie in Gondar, Gondar, Ethiopia - Photos

The monastery of Debre Birhan Selassie is located less than 2 kilometers northeast of the city of Gondar. The whole was erected in the 17th century under the reign of Emperor Yohannes I. In its interior is the church of the same name - undoubtedly the most famous in all of Ethiopia - whose translation into Spanish would be more or less that of "Trinidad in the Mountain of Light". The importance of this church lies not only in its suggestive exterior architecture, but in the treasure that it holds inside it and more specifically in its roof in whose beams we can see the winged heads of 80 smiling angels or cherubs who observe the visitor with an enigmatic expression, each face has an exclusive feature that differentiates it from the rest. These extraordinary frescoes were made at the end of the seventeenth century and are undoubtedly one of the most important examples of mural painting in the continent.
