The rusting hulks of once sea- worthy ships in the Aral Sea...

UZBEKISTAN - 2004/02/29: The rusting hulks of once sea- worthy ships in the Aral Sea, Uzbekistan. The Aral Sea, lying between Uzbekistan and Kazakstan, was once the fourth largest lake in the world. It has been shrinking since the 1960s after the rivers that fed it were diverted by Soviet irrigation projects. By 2007, it had declined to 10% of its original size. The shrinking of the Aral Sea has been called "one of the planet's worst environmental disasters", destroying the once-prosperous fishing industry, bringing unemployment and economic hardship. It has also, reportedly, induced local climate change, with hotter summers and colder winters. (Photo by Leisa Tyler/LightRocket via Getty Images)
