The Armistice Coach

The Armistice Coach. Car No. 2419 of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits et des Grands Express Europen (the International Sleeping Car Company), built in 1913. It was in this carriage which, at the time, was part of Marchal Foch's personal train that German, French, and British military senior officers signed the armistice in the Forest of Compigne on 11 November 1918, thus ending the First World War. On the 22nd June 1940, in the same carriage in the same spot, the armistice that led to the partition and occupation of France was signed. Photo taken between 1927 and 1940, when the coach was on display. It was eventually destroyed in the last days of World War II. (Photo by Michael Nicholson/Corbis via Getty Images)
