Abbe Pierre in Uruguay
(Original Caption) Abbe Pierre is one of France's most high-profile priests, and widely regarded as a living saint. He has dedicated his life to social goals, awakening French awareness to the problem of homelessness following World War II. Preaching by example, he created homeless shelters in his own gardens in 1949, which soon expanded into larger communities, known as Emmaus Communities. Members supported themselves by recycling and refurbishing rubbish. The Emmaus movement spread across the world, and the Emmaus International Association was founded in 1971. In 1994, Abbe Pierre visits Uruguay where several Emmaus member groups are located. (Photo by Micheline Pelletier/Sygma via Getty Images)
