Bun Na gathers water from a communal well during his first...

VEAL THOM, KAMPONG SPEU, CAMBODIA - 2003/08/01: Bun Na gathers water from a communal well during his first day in Veal Thom. Bun Na left a life of begging on Phnom Penh's streets to start anew in the village. He lost his leg and much of his face to a landmine while fighting for the Cambodian government against the Khmer Rouge. He wants a new life for himself and his wife where he won't be judged by his amputations. Deep in the hinterlands, down a rutted dirt road, a small village shelters the remnants of Cambodia’s civil war. Some 200 disabled veterans - both Khmer Rouge and government soldiers - and their families have moved to Veal Thom, or “Big Field.” There they build huts, grow rice, cultivate flowers and do what society will not allow in their homelands: live in peace. Though they lost limbs and parts of their lives in Cambodia's civil war, their wounds mark them as outcasts in the Cambodian society.. (Photo by Jerry Redfern/LightRocket via Getty Images)
