Bio : Ray Montford is one of those rare guitarists who, like Jeff Beck and David Gilmour, does not consider virtuosity as a means in itself, and who knows how to make his instrument sing, wringing emotion from every note.  With six albums to his credit (both acoustic and electric), Ray has built a repertoire that plays like a series of magical sonic pictures.

Ray began playing guitar at the age of 12 and got serious about it at 18, where he began learning by ear and woodshedding with the great rock records of that era.  After studying audio engineering, production, and performance in the Music Industry Arts program at Fanshawe College and doing a term in the music program at Humber, Ray started writing his own compositions and opened up his own studio; Soundhole.  His moving instrumentals have been heard on national CBC radio and in the CBS television series The Eleventh Hour, the CBC TV documentary Marymount Again, and the PBS/Vision TV series Marginless Living and Who is My Neighbour – among other places. Ray and his band have played the Toronto’s Beaches Jazz Festival numerous times, several theatres and clubs in Toronto and in 2001 they toured The Netherlands.  They have also opened Toronto and Montreal dates for the Tony Levin Band (Peter Gabriel).  In 2009 and 2010, the Ray Montford Group played the prestigious Canadian Guitar Festival.  Ray eschews bar gigs in favour of performances in theatres, festivals and listening rooms.

Ray and his band are currently recording a new studio album with producer Terry Brown (Rush, Max Webster), which is slated for a fall 2012 release.
