A piece of Larimar gemstone being cut - Photos

An artisan precariously makes a precision cut to a beautiful piece of Larimar gemstone, at a workshop near the town of La Cienaga. Larimar is a blue variety of pectolite, and is found only in a small and remote region in the southwest of the Dominican Republic. Although Larimar?s discovery dates back to 1916, it was a local artist in the 1970's that rediscovered the stone washed up on the shores of a remote beach. He named the stone after his daughter (Larissa) and the Spanish word for sea (mar).
