Miners carry sulfur blocks across bridge - Photos
Showing their strength, sulfer miners carry up to 90kg over a small bridge away from the acidic lake at Kawah Ijen. This is the site of a labor intensive sulfur mining operation where, amid clouds of poisonous sulfur dioxide gas, miners extract and then carry heavy loads of pure sulphur in baskets on their shoulders up a steep rocky path from the crater floor to a processing plant at the base of the volcano.
