Attack from Below - Photos

The sardine run is an annual migration up the east coast of South Africa towards Mozambique where it moves offshore towards cooler waters. It is thought to be a seasonal reproductive migration and there are years it does not occur. As the sardines migrate predators such as common dolphins, sharks, Cape gannets and whales, such as the Brydes whale, follow and a feeding frenzy often begins. This image shows how the common dolphins work together as a team to round up the sardines into a bait ball then attack it to feed.
