Ryogin-an is well known for its three zen karesansui gardens...

TOFUKUJI, KYOTO, JAPAN - 2015/11/07: Ryogin-an is well known for its three zen karesansui gardens. The south garden, called the "garden of vanity" consists of an austere rectangle of raked gravel echoing the emptiness of vanity. The Garden of the Dragon has stones dramatically placed amidst black and white gravel - each dark area represents a dragon or clouds. The Eastern garden is the "Garden of the Inseparable" with a single ginkgo tree in the background. This garden uses purple gravel uncommon for zen gardens. All three gardens were designed by Shigemori Mirei a modern master landscape gardener who designed other gardens at Tofukuji. (Photo by John S Lander/LightRocket via Getty Images)
