DENVER, CO. - MAY 15: Lisa Abeyta and her dog, Babie, lay down for the night under a tree in Sanchez Park, Denver, CO, May 15, 2014. Unable to get a spot at the Women's Emergency Shelter she said, I'm scared but Im not to show it. I guess this is better than staying downtown or at a bus station. She hugs Babie, At least if someone comes Ill hear them. Babies really protective, its like hes on guard duty Hes my faithful guard dog. Lisa Abeyta had no backup plan when her landlord stopped paying the mortgage on the townhouse she was renting. She had three days to pack her things and leave. With no place to go, she became homeless. Diagnosed with depression and bipolar disorder, she struggled to find help. After more than a year of shuffling from shelters to camps and back to shelters, she found permanent housing through the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless.(Photo By Craig F.
