The standoff ended when Algerian forces stormed the facility three days later. The seize resulted in the death of 38 hostages and 29 militants. A spokesperson for the militant group said the hostage seizure was the response to the French warplanes attacking Mali’s militants. The gas plant is a joint venture between Algeria’s Sonatrach Company and foreign firms British Petroleum and Norwegian Statoil. (Photo DigitalGlobe via Getty Images)
