1st April 1939: A poor area of Clydeside. Glasgow began an ambitious housing plan in 1919 when it was estimated that 57,000 new homes were needed including 21,000 to ease overcrowding and 15,000 for the expanding population. By May 1937 66,619 houses were built or being constructed with electric light and especially low rent for residents being rehoused.
