Germany And France Celebrate 50th Anniversary Of Elysee Treaty

BERLIN, GERMANY - JANUARY 22: Members of the German Bundestag and French Assemblee Nationale, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande (2nd up from L), German President Joachim Gauck (R), French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault (3rd up from L), Bundestag President Norbert Lammert (bottom R) and Assemblee Nationale President Claude Bartolone (bottom L) arrive for a joint session of the two governments at the Bundestag during the 50th anniversary celebration of the Elysee Treaty on January 22, 2013 in Berlin, Germany. The treaty, concluded in 1963 by Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer in the Elysee Palace in Paris, set a new tone of reconciliation between France and Germany, and called for consultations between the two countries to come to a common stance on policies affecting the most important partners in Europe as well as the rest of the region. Since its establishment, the document for improved bilateral relations has been seen by many as the driving force behind European integration. (Photo by Sean Gallup/Getty Images)
